Artist: Public Service Broadcasting
Release: The Race For Space
Label: Test Card Recordings
Public Service Broadcasting are pleased to share their eagerly anticipated new album The Race For Space – due Feb 23rd 2015 via Test Card Recordings.
Granted unique access to historically important films from the BFI, PSB go back in time and explore the period when the USA and USSR fought to gain the upper hand in a new frontier – space.
The record follows the release of their acclaimed debut album Inform – Educate – Entertain in 2013 which reached #21 in the UK album chart, was nominated for Best Independent Album at the AIM Awards and included in BBC 6Music’s Top 10 Albums of the Year. 18 months’ extensive touring across the world followed with over 200 shows in support of the album. Highlights included audiences queueing round the block at their showcase at The British Music Embassy @ SXSW, the band wowing festival audiences up and down the country including Glastonbury, Bestival, Green Man and many more, selling out countless headline shows (London’s Forum, The Mercury Lounge in New York & Lanificio in Rome to name a few) – not to mention supporting the likes of The Rolling Stones, New Order & Manic Street Preachers.
Artist: Jona Sul
Label: Southern Fried Records
Southern Fried records are kicking off the New Year with an exciting new talent in the form of Brighton’s Jona Sul. ‘Neighbourhood’ will be his first EP for the label and is sure to be the start of a fruitful new relationship that finds the imprint focussing on artist and album projects going forward.
Brighton’s Jona Sul is an artist who crafts proper songs and someone who has the potential to conjure up coherent, full length musical journeys. It stems from years of producing all types of music and playing in bands; from submerging himself in influences a world away from 4/4 and from a passion for field recordings and free flowing experimentation. What’s more, his sensitive sound lends itself to immersive live shows where true narrative sits alongside dance floor clout.
The first cut here is the title track, a shimmering, emotive affair with shuffling drums, lots of glistening electronics and magical synths and wordless vocals that lend a celestial air to the reflective grooves. Think Four Tet and you’ll be in the right sort of ball park for this beautiful debut.
The second cut ‘Long 20’s’ is a little more direct, with pained vocal ad libs stretched out over lazy, tumbling drums, sombre chords and expertly crafted synth patterns that get treated and played like real instruments. It’s a fresh sound, expertly produced and appeals as much to heart and head as it does to heel.
This EP marks the start of what is sure to be a fine career for this bright new hope.
Release: Cold Walls / Cloudy Eyes
Label: Beach Community
Four-piece Berkshire alt-rock outfit Hindsights release their debut album ‘Cold Walls/Cloudy Eyes’ on 23rd February 2015 through UK indie label Beach Community. The album was recorded over two weeks in June 2014 at HQ Studios in Manchester with Bob Cooper (Nai Harvest, Self Defence Family, Brawlers). Additional production and help with tracking the record came from Tom Richfield, credited in the recording of the Departures/Moose Blood split EP and also on Hang The Bastard’s album.
Expansive and cathartic, you can hear the band’s struggles and turmoil within the highly fraught ten tracks that comprise ‘Cold Walls/Cloudy Eyes’. That being said, they don’t shy away from poppier sensibilities with the catchy refrains shining through the complex musical textures.
The emotion invested in Hindsights’ music and lyrics more than comes across in the band’s heartfelt live show. Stay tuned for live dates in 2015.
Artist: Sundara Karma
Label: Believe Recordings
‘Shimmering riffs that could start a heatwave. Sublime’ – NME
‘We can all cheer that the band is now out of school, so that they can totally focus on creating more of these enchantingly addictive gems.’ – The Line of Best Fit
‘Sounding sweetly anthemic with every build and release’ – Earmilk
‘Sultry, full-bloodied indie pop from four seriously promising teens.’ – The Sun
Following on from the single ‘Indigo Puff’ in October, Reading four-piece Sundara Karma are now set to release their brilliant debut four-track EP ‘EPI’ on February 23. From the hugely anthemic EP opener ‘Loveblood’, to the Foals-esque rhythms of ‘Waves’, the whole EP soars with thundering synths, shimmering guitars and a confidence that belies their years.
Live wise Sundara Karma start 2015 strong with dates with The Wombats, Alvvays and Darlia, along with their own headline EP launch show at the Sebright Arms on March 10 (full live dates listed below).
Formed by Oscar Lulu (vocals), Haydn Evans (drummer), Ally Baty (guitarist) and Dom Cordell (bassist), the 18-year-old school friends have gone from figuring out cover versions to writing their own sunkissed, uplifting indie-pop. In 2012, after making the BBC Introducing playlist with their ear-ly track ‘Freshbloom’, they were selected to play two of the UK’s biggest festivals at Reading and Leeds. This led to a support tour with Swim Deep which culminated with a huge show at London’s Shepherds Bush Empire. Their previous singles ‘Cold Heaven’ and ‘Indigo Puff’ have caused a wave of interest in the band seeing them gain radio support from the likes of Zane Lowe, Phil and Alice, Huw Stephens, Jen and Ally, XFM Evening Playlist and Amazing A List. Having now finished school the band are now full time working on making the band a success.
With their innate knack for writing solid pop hooks, an infectious sense of fun surrounding the group and some interesting, unconventional methods of inspiring and grabbing the attention of their audi-ence, this is a young band to watch.
