Mina Tindle –  Taranta

LABEL: Believe Recordings

FORMAT: LP

GENRE: Alternative – Indie Pop

DATE: 28/05/12

After her well received debut EP at the end of 2011 (acclaimed blog Gorilla vs Bear rated it 22 in their top 100 albums of 2011), Mina Tindle’s stunning LP Taranta is out today through Believe Recordings.

Mina Tindle is a name that’s been whispering through the alternative-folk scene like a breath of fresh air for some years now. And a interesting name it is too (borrowed from Milo Tindle, a character in Joseph Mankiewicz’s 1972 film Sleuth) for a French singer (with Spanish roots) who has electrified anyone lucky enough to see her live or hear her self-produced songs. “It sums up where I’ve got to, but it’s also a new stage on the road,” says the French singer of her debut album, having done her fair share of knocking about – a coming-of-age trip to the US, a sensation on stage and on MySpace, working with different kinds of musicians – before she caught up with the leading pack of female folk-pop singers. Her album, produced by JP Nataf, reveals a free-roaming spirit searching for moments of musical grace. It’s a luscious, personal album that will remind some of Feist, Kate Bush and Emiliana Torrini. A stage victory.

She is already causing major waves in her native France, where everyone from Le Inrocks (who gave Taranta an amazing 4.5 out of 5!), Telerama and Liberation to fashion magazines Elle and Magic have hailed her as the next big thing.

” One of the most exquisite, promising, and generally unheard debuts of the year – Gorilla Vs Bear”

Laurel Collective – Heartbeat Underground

LABEL: Tape Club Records

FORMAT: EP

GENRE: Alternative

DATE: 28/05/12

Laurel Collective’s long-awaited debut album is finally out today through Tape Club Records.

“Heartbeat Underground”’s shimmering titular album opener is a nod in the rhythmic direction of Grizzly Bear and later LCD Soundsystem.  Blissful “Sunshine Buddy” follows with ooh-ahhs, wahs and even bahs before it’s possessed by a psychedielic freakout. “They Hate Me” (available now as a free download) and single “Fax Of Death” fizz, gurgle and shimmer while tracks such as “Window” and “Cheap” are works of discordant, electronic madness.  The album ends with two-part “Fizzing Blood” where we “Escape from the inane/on the wings of a crooked crane”, before zither samples and sub-bass drive us towards the dead air. “As an album, it is nonsense,” says Bob Tollast (one half of the two frontmen). “But nonsense is good. Sad song nonsense. Love related nonsense. Lovely nonsense.” The lyrics wow and flutter like frequency wobbles.  Once it’s all said and done all you will be able to do is go back to the beginning – start again and start over – hear the band’s pulse rise again from the depths.

This is the band who, whilst holding down 9 to 5’s (which includes call centres, a phlebotomist, and even producing duties, drummer Charlie Andrew recently produced the new Alt-J record) conceived and curate their own festival, In The Woods. Their tireless superhuman efforts brought to our attention the likes of Micachu and the Shapes, Pete and the Pirates and a beguiling young woman called Anna Calvi; and now they deserve the same attention. Laurel Collective epitomise intelligent music at its best: a witty, diverse and modern take on the indie genre.

“A chaotic mix of rippling vocals, intricate melodies and pretty much everything else in between that makes a good pop track… Laurel Collective has produced something that prominently stands out from the crowd.” – Planet Notion

“A suitably LSD-coated dose of manga-pop… Beautifully mental.” – Artrocker

Public Service Broadcasting – The War Room

LABEL: Test Card Recordings

FORMAT: EP

GENRE: Alternative – Electronic / EBM

DATE: 28/05/12

Granted unique access to propaganda films from WWII-era Britain by the BFI and setting them to new music, Public Service Broadcasting unveil “The War Room EP”, out today. Expect breathtaking visuals, atmospheric synths, pounding drums, Krautrock guitars and poignant piano as J. Willgoose, Esq and his drumming companion Wrigglesworth teach the lessons of the past through the music of the future…

The 5-track EP takes a look at the war from a British perspective – taking in the preparations for war in the foreboding ‘If War Should Come’, proudly boasting during the Blitz that ‘London Can Take It’, and emphasising the importance of the home front in ‘Dig For Victory’.
Lead track ‘Spitfire’ – a driving, motorik Krautrock influenced tune – is an adaptation of the 1942 Leslie Howard film ‘The First of the Few’, telling the story of the origins of the talismanic fighter. Howard was viewed by Josef Goebbels as the most dangerous British propagandist of the era and his own life was to end in tragedy when the passenger plane he was travelling on in 1943 was shot down by the Luftwaffe over the Bay of Biscay.

The War Room is dedicated to J. Willgoose, Esq.’s great-uncle, George Willgoose, who died at the Battle of Dunkirk in 1940 aged 26. The final track of the EP, ‘Waltz for George’, is a sombre close to affairs, featuring the banjolele owned and played by George Willgoose which has remained in the family. This EP has already received much support from BBC Radio 6, with the track “Spitfire” recently winning Steve Lamacq’s Rebel Playlist.

Los Colorados – Move It!

LABEL: Motor Music

FORMAT: LP

GENRE: World – Russia

DATE: 01/06/12

LOS COLORADOS is a Coverband from Ternopil, Ukraine who mix some traditional vibes into worldwide hits. With their first cover version, a Balkan interpretation of Katy Perry’s „Hot N Cold“, they gained world wide attention – not least because Katy Perry herself was the one who discovered it in the web and spreaded it with a simple, but appropriate “amazing” on her Twitter, and the cover became a hit to millions.

Their cover version of “I Like to Move It” (Reel 2 Real) was chosen by Detlev Buck, director of the European Championship 2012 trailer, to become the musical identity of the prestigious sport event.

As well as these two songs they have restyled Pop, Rock and HipHop classics like “U Can’t Touch This” (MC Hammer), “Du hast” (Rammstein), “Let It Be” (Beatles) and more, into a modern-fashioned Balkan style supported by accordion and balalaika.

Elro –  Bad News EP

LABEL: The Beats

FORMAT: Single

GENRE: Hip Hop

DATE: 28/05/12

“Bad News EP” by Elro is out today through Mike Skinner and Ted Mayhem’s recently reformed legendary label, The Beats!

Wales; home to Dame Shirley, Giggsy, Pobol Y Cwm and now Elro. Elro is a 23 year old rapper from Chepstow, who describes himself as “a pretentious white boy whose main influence is getting rejected by women” – not your typical rapper’s personal-statement. After trying his hand at stand-up-comedy and writing rhymes about his dislike for Boris Johnson, Elro gained notoriety when his F64 for SBTV quickly became one on the highest viewed videos in channel’s history – 1.5 million and counting.

After discovering Elro on SBTV, Mike Skinner felt there was finally a rapper who could live up to the standards of The Beats, and booked in a studio session with Elro as part of his new project The D.O.T. with Rob Harvey. It soon became clear that “Bad News” was a track finally worthy of The Beats seal of approval, and the label was re-born.

This EP release features three tracks, Bad News, Said & Done and Mike Skinner’s German Car Park Mix of the title track, which will see Elro’s fan base looking forward to his full length debut alter on this.
